Update on Honey & A Bit About Polly

I had made the vets appointment for 10am this morning.  Whilst trying to get Honey’s collar and lead on she banged her tail and .......yep blood to clean up in the hall when I got back from the vets.
Right the vets went like this:  Honey had her tail shaved (not the whole tail).  She screamed like we were cutting the tail off.  We could then see that it was a very tiny split, but the vet said there is a vein right there, so that’s why there was so much more blood than when she did it the two times last year.  With it shaved she was able to put on a specially shaped dressing with some brown tape round the top.  She said it should stay in place.  Got to take Honey back Thursday morning to have a new dressing on and probably again Saturday to have a new dressing on.  She said if it wouldn’t heal, then she would have to have part of her tail cut off.  They would take a fair bit, so the length of tail that’s left is unlikely to hit something when she wags it.  Whilst it would solve the problem completely, I don’t want that to happen yet.  I will ask the vet if I can buy some of the special dressings, just in case.
Then it was Polly’s turn.  I had to take her for her check up before they would give me a further 6 months supply of Rimadyl for her Arthritis.
I asked about her eyes and she confirmed she has a cataract in both eyes.  She said they would only do cataract surgery on a very young dog and it would mean taking it to Cambridge to a specialist.  She said Polly would adjust and because of her age she probably would die before she went blind anyway.
She agreed she needed her teeth cleaning.  Better to have it done now as she is 9.  She didn’t think any would need to come out.  Whilst they have her under for that they will cut her nails very short.
Got to get a wee sample from her first wee Thursday morning and take it in when I take Honey.  Will take Polly as well, as they may decide to do blood tests depending on what the wee shows.  This is because she has lost 1.30kgs since last October and then she had lost and the previous time so over all she has lost just over 5kgs since June 2014.  I thought she had lost weight as you can see more of her ribs and spine.  I would have expected her to have gained over the winter months, so we need to see if anything nasty is happening.
Honey had gained a little bit of weight, but she’s still in the correct weight range.  They say up to 3kgs above their racing weight.  Polly has dropped below her racing weight over the last three weigh ins.
So I am now £53.45 lighter in my bank account and of course there’s still Thursday’s to pay for and maybe more.

It's now three and a half hours since the vet put the dressing on Honeys tail and it's still on.

Blood soaking through the end of the dressing the vet put on this morning.  I just put Honey in the car and dashed round to the vets without ringing first.  This time a different vet and she has put so much on the tail, I doubt Honey could wag it.

So £25.41 more money spent at the vets and more blood to clean up in the hall.

Really hoping everything is ok now until I have to take her in Thursday morning.

We really hope you have had a better day than we have.

Not How I Expected My Easter Sunday To Go

Best laid plans and all that.....My Easter Sunday was supposed to  me going to my friends for lunch and probably spending most of the the rest of the day there.

Well that didn't happen, as 20 minutes before we were due to leave (my girls were going with me), Honey split the end of her tail.  She is a Wagger and has done this twice before, but never this bad.  No room escaped the splatters of blood.  Seriously how did she even get some in the kitchen, when she didn't go in there???

It took me two and a half hours to clean it all up and I know I will keep finding spots I have missed probably for weeks.

My friend said, give it a couple of hours and if it hasn't bled come on over with the girls.  I explained that if it opened up at hers she wouldn't thank me, but she insisted.  So I had a shower, washed my hair and came into the living room to ring her to say I was about to leave.  Honey got out of her bed and wagged her tail.  In slow motion I saw it hit the table and there she blows.....blood splattered all over the place.

Second clean up of the day done, I phoned my friend and said it just wasn't meant to be today.  Hope to go over Thursday.

All was fine until I put the girls leads on to go outside for their toilet break before they had dinner.  You guessed it, whack goes that tail and bloods splatters on top of blood splatters.

If only she wouldn't wag it.  For a few seconds I have to confess to wondering if I could taped her tail loosely to her back leg.....but no I couldn't do that.  i have since seen this mentioned on the Greyhound Data Base and also on YouTube.

Phoned my friend Hilary, who has had loads of dogs and Greyhounds in particular.  First thing she mentioned was the hair roller, but I don't have any.  Went on to YouTube and saw a video on how to bandage a tail.  Read on the Greyhound Database how to put something over the end to protect it.  Smarties container was mentioned, so they are on my list:)

Not having anything just right, I found some stiff card and made a tubbe.  Put some Aloe Vera Gel on the end of the tail and then slipped the tube over it.  Fixed it in place with a bit of Vet Wrap coming up over the end, but leaving a small gap for air to get in, and then Vet Wrap round that and up just over where the rube ended and then fixed it to itself.

Ok I am no vet, but I was pleased with the end result.

That was twenty minutes ago and it's not dropped off.  Mind you Honey has remained in her bed.  I did hold her tail up and it stayed in place, so we will just have to see.  She wasn't even bothered when I was doing it.

For any of you who wouldn't believe the amount of blood, there are photos to follow and they really don't show just how bad it was.  What I found best for getting it off the walls in particular was Ace.  I have this product to get stains out of my laundry.  A bit of that in the water and a cloth did the trick.

So that has been my Easter Sunday.  Hope you have had a much better one.

An Adventure With Friends

The girls and I, along with my friend Hilary and her two Greyhounds and Pointer went to a nature reserve last week.  The weather was perfect, the ground being sandy wasn't too wet after recent rain and all of us enjoyed the walk.  It's roughly half way between me and Hilary and only took about 15 minutes to reach.  We'd not been before, but we will definitely go again.

We saw a Muntjac deer, although the dogs weren't sure if it was a dog as they are small.

Before getting back in the cars, Hilary took this photo.  I was very glad the dogs didn't see a deer or rabbit:)

We hope you enjoy the weekend.

Orthopaedic memory Foam Beds

I got two orthopaedic memory foam dog bed pads the other day.  Mainly for Polly, as it should help her Arthritis.  They have a washable cover and the memory foam is in a waterproof wipeable cover.

They were vacuum packed, so I had to leave them to plump up.

Honey investigated.

Just look at the excitement.

The new pads are now in the rigid beds, but Honey chose to lay on one of the old pad.

Polly was happy to lay on the floor.

Finally Polly is happy with the new pads and decides to cuddle her Winnie the Pooh.

Hope you have a lovely weekend.

All Friends Together

Well the girls and I stayed at our friends home Monday to Wednesday so we could look after her two Greyhounds and Pointer, as she had a funeral to attend.

We had a lovely time.  Polly loves Milo and wanted to be near him as much as possible.

Polly mellowed so much she even let Honey lay on the same dog bed as her.

Honey picked Teddy as her favourite toy.

When she wasn't with Milo, Polly snuggled up with me on the sofa.  I think her Christmas List will have Sofa on it:)

This one is Flora.

Here's Polly and Flora together.

You may be wondering where the photos of Sofia the Pointer are.  Well I only took one, as she stayed in her bed in my friends bedroom and only came out when I took her outside for toilet breaks or for a walk.  She was rescued in Spain and is a very anxious girl.  It was nice to see her tail wag when we went for a walk.

Not a very good photo, but there are Peacocks roaming around where my friend lives.  On this occasion Honey spotted them actually in the garden.  She's not seen them before and wasn't sure whether to be excited or scared:)

Well we hope you are having a good week.

Don't forget to hug your hound/s.

Birthday Girl (1st March)

On this day in 2007 a lovely little black Greyhound was born.  She grew up, raced and then retired.  She came to me on 15th September, 2012.

Her life now is all about being spoilt.  She sleeps on average 16 hours a day, like most Greyhounds.  She likes her walks, although the Arthritis sometimes means she can't go as far as she'd like.  She still loves to play with the stuffies and even has the odd zoomies round my little flat.

She was reluctant to get out of her warm bed for our early morning walk.

Then she found the celebrations all rather tiring, so she did this.

Then Honey joined in.

Despite her Arthritis, she is doing well.  Hopefully she'll have many more Birthdays with me and Honey.
